About

GERI

Gender Equity Reading Initiative (GERI) is a program from  Safe Haven Ministries. GERI gives readers tools to handle difficult conversations, promotes healthy relationships and prevents violence.

Our Mission

Preventing domestic and sexual violence

The Gender Equity Reading Initiative is a program from Safe Haven Ministries that uses children’s books as an effective method of violence prevention. We created a list of age-appropriate books for children and teens that explore alternatives to violence. Our carefully chosen books promote gender equity, leadership, respecting boundaries and community. These shared values help to reduce the impact of harm on youth and their families.

Our Goals

We Seek To:

  • Promote Alternatives to Violence

  • Be inclusive of marginalized voices

  • Challenge social norms that accept violence

  • Empower girls and young women to be leaders in their community

  • Teach young people the power of their voices

  • Give Caregivers and Parents the tools and resources to feel empowered

GERI readers include pre-K through high school-aged youth. The books we choose to share are developmentally appropriate and rooted in child development theory.
